This is basically a rant journal concerning deviantart's price hike from about $25 for a year premium to $50.
Note that a 2 year premium used to be $47.95
Less is more, apparently.

Here's a journal on what you can do:

UPDATE:
According to the journal above, deviantart is basically broke, but I still believe that the points I've made are still valid concerning my economic take on Core and how the demand for Core will decrease, doing more harm than good.

From an economic stand point, deviantart is so focused on making a profit that they have failed to realize that they severely cut down on the demand of the 'core membership'. A majority of deviantart's users are teenagers. Teenagers who don't typically earn much money and if they do, they aren't about to dish out $50 that could be spent saving up or buying games, clothes, phones, gas bills, etc. Those who do have premiums have been earning points overtime, scraping by in hopes that they can get a premium membership.

Sadly, deviantart only cares about making a profit. Of course, making a profit is a good thing. If they didn't, the site would not last. They wouldn't be able to hire workers or keep the site up and running.

Let me repeat: Deviantart making a profit is good for everyone.

Deviantart is just going about it all wrong. Like I said, a majority of users can no longer afford to come up with that money or are willing to part with it in one sitting. Especially when they know that a 2 year premium used to be $47.95. Even paying for it monthly is ridiculous seeing as it'll add up in the end, anyway. A smaller majority who belong to the 10% who can easily afford the $50 will likely not pay for it because they are angered by the unreasonable price hike.

Unreasonable? But deviantart has been pumping out all of these new updates!
Rant begins here, feel free to disregard as this is all personal opinion on the changes I've hated:

It is unreasonable because deviantart has not created any desirable or groundbreaking changes to the site (poll makers can now see the results without having to vote? A search option in your favorites folder that's just like the one in your gallery? Amazing. I'd never have come up with that in a million years.).

The site does not run any better and in fact, is doing a lot worse now than in has in the past. Many users have complained about the new set up, the new logo, etc.

The format of the site no longer features 'daily deviations' and the only way you actually view them now is if you actually seek them out on a separate tab on the front page. This lessens the importance of DD's. Views and favorites for those have dropped since the new layout was put into place.

The 'Today' tab doesn't always showcase art that's been made 'today' and it's horribly formatted with the deviations being different sizes.

Hashtags are abysmal and have made tagging artwork a nightmare. #Justbecauseitworksfortumblrandtwitterdoesntmeanitworksfordeviantart #obnoxious #plsstop

The dA logo was fine the way it was. It actually looked like 'dA'. Now it looks like a badly written Z. A cross if you squint.

The commission widget was a great addition.... until we realized dA took 20% of our earnings. I understand taking some of the earnings makes it so that people will keep buying points, but 20% is a pretty penny to pay.

dA's updates have LIMITED 'core members' abilities to customize their profiles, constraining their space with no known work around.

dA does NOT listen to the community or address any of the pressing issues that we've brought up. A majority of the changes that have been made have received a serious backlash yet nothing's happened. spyed and whoever else is running deviantart have lost sight of what's important. The community that helped this dAmn website grow. Of course they would pay back their members by asking them to pay more to keep what they've always had.

What's up with the name change? Core Membership? To make premium members feel like they're special because they're a core part of deviantart? What about those who contribute but don't have this "core membership"? The orange colors and star are an obnoxious orange. Burn it all with fire, please.

Deviantart hit its prime a long time ago and now, in its desperation to stay up to date, has begun its downfall.

Deviantart is dying.

And here's an open letter to the spyed from an ex-staff member. A lovely read, really.
Please note that this letter does not address the price change, but other problems dA has.
Dear deviantART...I am refusing to use the rebranded name because, I'm annoyed about the rebrand. I'm annoyed about your direction, your lack of focus in key areas and your lack of communication. I said I'd never be a bitter former staff member, but it seems that I am.
Last year you spent a lot of money on a rebrand, this year you've cut 50% of your work force, entire departments have been decimated and peoples lives have been thrown upside down without notice. But you never really communicated to anyone why. You still don't, you're not telling the community what's happening and that's only going to hurt you. People will see that helpdesk tickets take longer to get a response, people see that lots of people are no longer staff and you're not letting them know why. You know that people have a belief that the site is dying, you're only furthering it right now. How much of a better state would the site be in if the rebrand hadn't happened? Would I and the rest of the people that lost our jobs without notic

JUST FYI: There was no warning of this change whatsoever. There has been no mention or notification of the price change from deviantart. The only reason why we've found out about this price change has been through word of mouth. Even now dA has remained unprofessional about addressing the situation and have remained silent.  Even now, no explanations have been given.

What are your thoughts?

It's sad because I was wanting Premium Membership and now I don't give a single shit about it anymore.
And I'm still a new member. :(
